The narration is a masterclass in contrast: Jason Clarke’s silken, amused delivery as the demonic suitor makes his offers sound like a lover’s promise, while Stella Hunter’s raw, almost breathless performance as the protagonist sells her unraveling faith with heartbreaking precision. The real standout, though, is Jacob Morgan’s supporting turn as a jaded priest; his weary cynicism grounds the story’s more operatic moments, and his scenes with Hunter crackle with the kind of tension you’d expect from a Le Carré thriller, not a horror romance. The pacing is where things get tricky. Loraine lingers *too* long in the middle act on the protagonist’s moral hand-wringing—some of the internal monologues could’ve been tightened without losing impact. And while the multi-narrator approach mostly works, Teddy Hamilton’s occasional over-enunciation in the more action-heavy scenes pulls you out of the mood. But the payoff? Worth it. The final act’s climax (no spoilers) is a tour de force of audio production, with layered voices and distorted effects that make the supernatural confrontation feel like it’s happening *inside your head*. This isn’t a book for casual listeners—it demands your attention, rewards close listening, and leaves you questioning whether any love that requires this much sacrifice is really love at all.
