Jay Gerald’s narration is the secret sauce here—his delivery of phrases like “the substrate of our perceptions is now programmable” made me pause the audiobook twice to stare at my phone, half-convinced I could poke a hole in reality if I just swiped hard enough. The book’s real power lies in its refusal to treat the Simulation Hypothesis as a binary question. Instead, Vexley treats it as a spectrum, with our current AI models and game engines sitting somewhere between proto-simulations and the full Monty. That framing alone is worth the listen, especially for anyone who’s ever felt their grip on “real” life slipping while stuck in a doomscrolling spiral. Where the book stumbles is in its occasional reliance on jargon-heavy analogies that assume too much baseline tech literacy—if you’re not at least passingly familiar with terms like “neural radiance fields” or “procedural storytelling,” you might find yourself rewinding a few sections. Also, the closing chapter on “architect ethics” feels tacked on, more like a TED Talk epilogue than a core argument. But these are minor nicks in an otherwise flawless execution. Gerald’s performance elevates the material from compelling to unsettling, particularly in the segments where he voices the book’s more chilling hypotheticals aloud. By the final minute, you’ll either be sprinting to delete your social media or signing up for a VR retreat—either way, you won’t look at your phone the same way again.
