About This Audiobook

S.E. Harmon’s *The Blueprint* isn’t your typical will-they-won’t-they romance—it’s a raw, unflinching dive into the messiness of unreciprocated love. Kelly Cannon is the kind of guy who’s built a life that looks perfect on paper: stable job, tight-knit family, great friends. But when his heart stubbornly latches onto his straight best friend, everything he thought he knew about happiness gets a violent rewrite. This isn’t a story of grand gestures or sudden epiphanies; it’s a slow, aching unraveling, where every glance and half-smile feels like a betrayal to his own logic. Harmon’s prose is sharp, stripping away the sugarcoating of romantic tropes to expose the gnawing discomfort of loving someone who can’t—and won’t—love you back the same way. The emotional weight isn’t just in Kelly’s turmoil but in the quiet devastation of a friendship stretched to its breaking point. If you crave romance that doesn’t tiptoe around the ugly truths of unrequited love, this is your blueprint.

The audiobook experience elevates Harmon’s work with dual narration that feels like a masterclass in vocal performance. Alexander Cendese’s portrayal of Kelly is a masterclass in restrained intensity—his raspy, weary tone nails the character’s exhaustion and quiet fury, while Sean Crisden’s gruff, no-nonsense delivery as Kelly’s other love interest (and complicating factor) adds a layer of tension that lingers long after the credits. The pacing keeps the story from wallowing, balancing introspective moments with sharp, dialogue-driven confrontations. This isn’t a book that coddles you; it’s one that demands you sit with the discomfort—and that’s precisely why it works.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *The Blueprint* expecting a standard queer romance with a healthy dose of angst, but Harmon delivered something far more visceral. Kelly’s voice—both narratively and aurally—is the driving force here, and Cendese’s performance nails the character’s mix of self-deprecation and simmering frustration. There’s a scene early on where Kelly drunkenly rants to his sister about his feelings, and Cendese’s delivery of that drunken, slurred speech is so painfully real it made me wince. Crisden’s performance as the straight love interest is a different kind of triumph; his voice alone instantly conveys the character’s stubbornness and latent emotional unavailability, making the dynamic feel achingly authentic. The audiobook’s production is seamless, with just enough ambient room tone to keep the focus on the characters without distracting. That said, the romance’s resolution felt a tad too neat for my tastes—I wanted more friction in the final act, more evidence that these two could actually break their cycles. And while Kelly’s internal monologue is razor-sharp, some of the secondary characters blur together a bit too much, making their roles feel like afterthoughts rather than meaningful foils. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise gripping listen. If you’re someone who’s ever loved someone they couldn’t have, *The Blueprint* will hit harder than you expect. Just keep tissues handy—this one’s messy, uncomfortable, and ultimately, unavoidable.
