The narrator’s performance is a standout, though not in the showy, voice-acting sense. Instead, they adopt a flat, almost detached tone that somehow makes the emotional beats land harder. When Miquel finally snaps, the contrast is devastating. That said, the pacing won’t suit everyone. Tóibín and the narrator trust the listener to sit with discomfort, and there are stretches where the tension simmers *just* below boiling without ever quite spilling over. I also wished for more texture in the secondary characters—Miquel’s father, in particular, sometimes feels more like a symbol than a person. But these are quibbles. The real triumph here is how the audiobook turns quietude into a weapon. The production is clean, with no distracting edits, letting Tóibín’s prose and the narrator’s understated delivery do the work. If you loved *A Long Winter* or crave fiction that’s more mood than plot, this is a must-listen. Just don’t expect neat resolutions—expect to be unsettled.
