She nails Lila’s sharp wit and simmering paranoia, shifting effortlessly from breezy confidence to a grittier, almost breathless edge when danger looms. Whelan’s pacing is impeccable—she lingers just enough on crucial details to let the tension simmer, then accelerates into dialogue-driven urgency when the plot demands it. The supporting cast is equally strong, with standout performances from the gravel-voiced security expert and the smarmy antique dealer whose charm hides something far darker. My only minor critique? The third act wraps up with a few too many convenient solutions, and Whelan’s voicing of a minor character veers into caricature territory (think over-the-top villainous purrs). But these are small stumbles in an otherwise masterful performance. If you crave a mystery that’s equal parts *Gone Girl* and cozy thriller, with a heroine who’s equal parts clever and vulnerable, *The Collector* delivers—and Whelan makes it unforgettable. Just don’t listen alone at night; the creaky floorboards in Lila’s brownstone might get to you.
