The Commentaries

As an audiobook, The Commentaries is a remarkable achievement. McCallion's narration is top-notch, bringing a sense of authenticity to the ancient text. I was particularly struck by his effective conveying of Caesar's emotions – from the excitement of battle to the cold calculation of politics. The production quality is also excellent, with clear sound and minimal noise. One minor quibble I had was with the pacing, which occasionally felt a bit halting. Caesar's writing is often dense and detailed, and some sections benefit from a slightly more dynamic delivery. Additionally, while McCallion does a great job of capturing Caesar's personality, some listeners may find the Roman general's egotism a bit tiresome at times. However, these minor complaints are far outweighed by the audiobook's many strengths. If you're interested in ancient history or simply want to experience one of the greatest works of military literature, The Commentaries is an absolute must-listen.
