Glenn Hascall’s narration of *The Country Doctor* is a masterclass in restraint—until it isn’t. His voice starts measured, almost weary, perfectly capturing the doctor’s professional detachment. But as the story’s surreal horror sets in, Hascall’s performance shifts into something jagged and unpredictable, his delivery mirroring the doctor’s crumbling grip on logic. The way he stretches out certain words—like ‘endless’ or ‘useless’—makes the air feel heavier, the dread more suffocating. That said, the audiobook’s runtime is so short that the subtlety of the performance risks getting lost in a single listen. The production is crisp, but the lack of musical cues or ambient noise makes the story feel overly sterile, almost clinical, which dampens the horror’s visceral impact. Still, Hascall’s voice lingers like the memory of a bad dream. If Kafka’s work is about the terror of being trapped in one’s own mind, this audiobook succeeds in making you feel like a prisoner in the doctor’s nightmare. Just don’t expect to sleep easily afterward.
