Wilson’s writing is undeniably smart, but the story occasionally suffers from an over-reliance on exposition over action, which Timson can only do so much to salvage with tone alone. The real star here is the atmosphere. Berlin in the late 1940s is rendered with a kind of grimy, neon-lit realism—think Graham Greene’s cynicism meets the claustrophobic tension of a Cold War thriller. The mystery at the heart of the story is compelling enough, but it’s the *feel* of the thing that lingers: the way trust is a luxury no one can afford, the way a simple drink in a dimly lit bar could be the last thing you ever order. If you’re the type who prefers your spy stories to simmer rather than explode, this audiobook delivers in spades. Just don’t expect a neat resolution—Wilson’s world doesn’t deal in easy answers.
