The Distance Between Us

I’ll admit: I was skeptical. A *romantic short story*? At two and a half hours, I worried it’d feel like a teaser for a longer book. But *The Distance Between Us* proves that brevity can be a superpower. Phillipa Ashley packs more chemistry into this runtime than some novels do in ten hours. The premise—a long-distance spark between a Cornish artist and a Scottish outdoorsman—could veer into cliché, but the execution is anything but. The real star here, though, is the narration. Emma Heap’s performance is *luminous*; she makes the protagonist’s self-doubt feel like a physical ache, especially in the scene where she’s painting the sea while arguing with him over the phone. Angus Yellowlees, meanwhile, avoids the trap of making the male lead sound like a gruff caricature. His delivery is warm but weathered, like a well-worn sweater—comforting, but with threads you want to pull. That said, the pacing isn’t perfect. The middle act drags slightly as the characters circle each other’s insecurities, and I wished for a sharper edit in the phone-call sequences (some repetition in their bickering feels unnecessary). The production is otherwise flawless—crisp audio, seamless transitions between narrators—but I docked half a star for a single jarring moment where the background noise levels abruptly shift mid-scene. Still, the ending *lands*. No neat bows, just the satisfying thud of two people finally admitting what the listener (and the wind, and the waves) already knew.
