Instead, she lets the silence between lines do the heavy lifting, especially in scenes where the protagonist’s paranoia peaks. There’s a moment around the 3-hour mark, when a seemingly innocuous phone call plays out, and Jones’ slight hitch in breath made my stomach drop. That’s how you sell psychological horror: not with screams, but with the absence of them. The story’s pacing is deliberate, almost *too* deliberate in the first act. Maddox takes her time establishing the protagonist’s fragile new life, and while it pays off in spades later, I’ll confess my attention wandered once or twice in the early chapters. (A tighter edit on some of the daily routine scenes might’ve helped.) But once the dominoes start falling? *Chef’s kiss.* The betrayal isn’t just a plot twist—it’s a violation, and Maddox makes you feel the weight of it. My only real critique is the ending, which wraps up a touch too neatly for a story that otherwise thrives on ambiguity. Still, the journey there is so gripping, I’d forgive a lot worse. If you love audiobooks that turn ‘normal’ into a threat, this is your next obsession—just maybe don’t listen while walking the dog alone at night.
