In the opening scenes, her warmth feels inviting, even romantic, but as the story progresses, her tone hardens into something brittle and unnerving. It’s a masterclass in how narration can amplify tension without a single musical cue. That said, the story’s pacing is its biggest strength—and occasional weakness. The first act drags slightly, meandering through the couple’s early bliss a bit too long before the cracks appear. But once the psychological games begin, the tension becomes almost unbearable. The ambiguity of who’s gaslighting whom (or if it’s all in their heads) is brilliant, though I could’ve used a little more clarity by the end—some questions feel intentionally left unanswered, which might frustrate readers who prefer tidy resolutions. Still, the audiobook’s production is flawless, with no audible distractions, and Chown’s performance elevates what could’ve been a forgettable domestic thriller into something genuinely haunting.
