The production is crisp, with just enough ambient warmth to underscore the story’s gothic undertones, but it never overpowers the performances. That said, the pacing occasionally drags in the middle act, when Williams lingers a tad too long on the family’s tedium, risking tonal whiplash after such a gripping opening. The audiobook’s standout moment comes when Scarfe delivers a late-night confrontation between Verena and Lotte with such raw vulnerability that you’ll pause the playback just to process it.
