One of the standout features of this audiobook is its ability to balance the sweeping narrative with a strong focus on character development. Rees's protagonist is a relatable and endearing figure, and Roberts's narration brings her inner world vividly to life. The production values are similarly impressive, with a clear and crisp sound quality that perfectly complements the narrative. Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

As I listened to Sophie Roberts bring Tracy Rees's The Elopement to life, I was struck by the way the narrative seemed to unfold with the gentle momentum of a lazy summer afternoon. It's a pace that belies the complexity of the story, which is full of unexpected twists and turns that keep listeners on the edge of their seats. One of the strengths of the book is its ability to balance the personal struggles of its characters with the larger social issues of the time, creating a rich and nuanced portrait of life in early 20th-century England. My only quibbles with the audiobook are minor: at times, Roberts's narration felt a bit too polished, which detracted slightly from the rough-around-the-edges feel of the characters' experiences. Additionally, some listeners may find the pacing a tad uneven in the novel's final act, which feels slightly rushed in comparison to the more leisurely pace of the rest of the story. Nonetheless, these are minor complaints in what is otherwise a truly exceptional audiobook.
