Kate Reading’s narration is the anchor—measured, warm, and effortlessly fluid across accents and ages. She gives each character a grounded presence, especially the women, whose inner lives are rich with restraint and strength. The pacing is deliberate; this isn’t a book that rushes, and the audiobook leans into that, letting silences and seasonal shifts breathe. At nearly 23 hours, it demands patience, and there are stretches—particularly in political debates over land rights—where momentum sags. I also wished for slightly more differentiation in the younger male voices, which occasionally blur together. But these are minor quibbles. The production is pristine, and Donati’s layered storytelling rewards deep listening. You’ll finish not with a bang, but with a lingering sense of having lived alongside these people.
