I’ll admit: I approached *The Eustace Diamonds* expecting a stuffy Victorian relic, but Trollope and Timothy West proved me spectacularly wrong. This is a novel that *moves*, not in explosive action but in the creeping dread of social ruin. Lizzie Eustace is a fantastic villain—selfish, calculating, yet weirdly pitiable—and Trollope refuses to let us look away as she lies, manipulates, and nearly destroys herself. The legal battles over the diamonds aren’t just plot devices; they’re a masterclass in how power operates, with men in wigs debating her fate while she’s treated as both a criminal and a child. West’s narration is a revelation. His delivery is so nuanced that you’ll find yourself rewinding to catch the sarcasm in a single line. That said, the audiobook isn’t flawless. The sheer volume of side characters (and their convoluted relationships) can be hard to track, especially in audio form—you’ll occasionally wish for a printed family tree. And while the pacing is generally excellent, the middle act drags slightly as Trollope indulges in subplots that don’t always pay off. But these are quibbles. The final act, where Lizzie’s schemes unravel with delicious inevitability, is worth every minute. If you love morally ambiguous heroines, razor-sharp social satire, or just a damn good story about jewels and justice, this is a must-listen. Just clear your schedule—you won’t want to pause.
