About This Audiobook

The audiobook's biggest strength lies in Keith Nobbs' narration. His performance brings Teddy and the supporting cast to life with just the right blend of youthful energy and heartfelt sincerity. Nobbs captures the intensity of the football scenes without overshadowing the underlying emotional core of the story. He handles the shifting tones from playful banter to poignant moments with impressive nuance, making the audiobook experience immersive. While the story isn't groundbreaking within the sports-coming-of-age genre, its authentic portrayal of a pre-teen boy's emotional struggles feels immediate and relatable, avoiding clichés often found in the genre.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I picked up 'The Extra Yard' expecting another compelling dive into Mike Lupica's familiar territory, and I wasn't disappointed. It delivers what I love from his Home Team series: characters I root for, genuine stakes, and a setting I can sink into – a neighborhood, a local league, a world where football is more than just a game, it's the center of life. Teddy is a fantastic protagonist, genuinely trying to do the right thing both on the field and at home, even if his world is complicated by typical family dynamics and his own sometimes clumsy efforts. Keith Nobbs' narration is excellent, perfectly capturing Teddy's earnest voice, the folksy charm of his parents (and grandmother), and the energy of the football action. You can practically hear the crowd roar off the page thanks to his work. The pacing is engaging, moving smoothly between football practice/games and home life, letting the emotional truth of Teddy's journey emerge naturally. Lupica excels at showing the small triumphs and setbacks of being young, and this sequel continues that strength well. My only minor critique is that the solution to Teddy's central problem (bridging that family gap) feels slightly neat-freakish, resolved with a sort of 'aha!' moment that might have benefited from a bit more lingering tension. However, this is barely a fault in an otherwise solid and enjoyable listen. Another winner from Lupica, narrated to perfection by Nobbs.
