The audiobook narration here is nothing short of revelatory. Jennifer Blom’s portrayal of Clara—a woman who speaks in measured, exhausted wisdom—feels like eavesdropping on a confession, her voice cracking just enough to betray decades of unresolved sorrow. Mia Hutchinson-Shaw’s Ness, by contrast, crackles with the raw impulsivity of a woman mid-identity crisis, her New England accent sharpening every sarcastic retort. But it’s Alexandra Ryan’s Moira who steals the show: she slips between brittle defensiveness and unexpected tenderness so seamlessly that I forgot she wasn’t three different people. The production team deserves praise for weaving their three voices together seamlessly; there are no jarring cuts or mismatched pacing, just the steady cadence of lives unfolding like a slow-growing tree. That said, the story’s environmental themes occasionally veer into didacticism, particularly during Ness’s activist arcs, which feel more like PSA interludes than organic character development. And while Dalton’s prose is undeniably gorgeous, some metaphors (like likening grief to “a fistful of dirt”) are repeated to the point of distraction. Still, these nitpicks fade against the book’s emotional heft. The climax, set in a storm-lashed forest at midnight, is so vivid I could feel the rain on my skin. Whether you’re drawn to family sagas, eco-fiction, or just stories where the land feels alive, this audiobook delivers a rare intimacy—like hearing a secret whispered by the trees themselves.
