I came to this audiobook after skipping the second book in the series, and while there’s a slight narrative catch-up curve, Marisa Calin’s narration smoothed over most gaps. Her voice has this earthy clarity—warm, but never cloying—that perfectly suits Nell’s quiet resilience. She doesn’t overact the magical elements, which I appreciated; instead, she lets the strangeness unfold naturally, making the garden’s sentience feel eerie rather than cartoonish. The dual timelines could’ve felt clunky, but Calin uses subtle shifts in tone and rhythm to distinguish past from present, enhancing the story’s mystery. That said, the pacing drags in the middle third. Brackston lingers on horticultural metaphors to the point of indulgence—beautiful, yes, but sometimes at the expense of momentum. Also, while the romance smolders effectively, the antagonist’s motivations remain frustratingly vague until the climax, making some plot turns feel convenient. Still, the audio production’s ambient details—the whispering leaves, the creak of an old gate—are masterfully integrated. It’s not flawless, but it’s immersive in a way only the best fantasy audiobooks achieve. For fans of atmospheric, character-driven magic, this is a rich listen worth the time.
