I’ll admit, I approached *The Heart of the Rebellion* skeptical of yet another ‘brothers divided by war’ tale—but Bessey’s writing hooked me within chapters. The novel’s strength lies in its unflinching portrayal of Wales as a land *occupied*, not just a picturesque backdrop. Rhys and Gwilym’s reunion isn’t some misty-eyed homecoming; it’s a collision of trauma and divergent paths. Rhys, the king’s former man, carries the weight of compromise, while Gwilym’s allegiance to Owain Glyndŵr’s rebellion burns with the fervor of a man who’s lost too much. Their scenes together crackle with unsaid resentment, and Bessey doesn’t shy from the ugliness of civil strife—betrayals here aren’t dramatic twists but slow, inevitable fractures. Aubrey Warner’s performance elevates the material significantly. His pacing is deliberate, letting the political intrigue breathe without dragging. The Welsh phrases (used sparingly but effectively) roll naturally off his tongue, and he nails the exhaustion in Rhys’s voice when he’s forced to justify his choices to his scornful brother. My only critique? The romance subplot, while well-integrated, occasionally feels like a respite from the heavier themes rather than an organic extension of them. And at times, the battle scenes—though visceral—could use more auditory distinction in the production (more ambient sound design would’ve heightened the chaos). Still, this is a historical fiction audiobook that respects its listeners’ intelligence.
