Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into The Invention of Wings with high expectations, and Sue Monk Kidd's latest novel did not disappoint. Jenna Lamia and Adepero Oduye deliver stunning performances as the Grimké sisters, bringing a depth and nuance to their characters that is nothing short of remarkable. Kidd's writing is, as always, evocative and masterful, painting a vivid picture of life in 19th-century America that is both harrowing and beautiful. One of the standout aspects of this audiobook is its pacing, which expertly balances moments of intense drama with quieter, more introspective scenes. The production is also noteworthy, with a score that perfectly captures the mood and atmosphere of each scene. If I have one critique, it's that the supporting cast feels slightly underdeveloped at times, which can make it difficult to fully connect with characters like John Grimké and Maria Weston Chapman. Still, this is a minor quibble in an otherwise exceptional audiobook that is sure to linger long after the final chapter.
