But Kate Hood’s honeyed narration turned skepticism into surrender faster than a mai tai dissolves in saltwater. Her voice drips with the effortless charm of a storyteller who’s lived a little, slicing through Morrissey’s dialogue with a warmth that makes Catherine’s awestruck moments feel intimate, even invasive. The chemistry between Catherine and her American sailor, Sam, crackles with tension, though I wished Morrissey had given him more depth beyond a chiseled jawline and a uniform. The pacing stumbles in the middle act, where Hawaii’s beauty threatens to overshadow the plot, but Hood’s performance keeps the momentum—her delivery of the novel’s Hawaiian pidgin phrases alone justifies the listen. Production is top-tier, with no distracting pops or muffled stretches, though I could’ve done without the overuse of beachy sound effects (waves crashing at every emotional beat got old fast). Still, by the final chapter, I was a convert, hooked on the way Morrissey balances sweeping romance with the grittier truths of cultural collision.
