Historical fiction with romantic tension can often feel like a Hallmark card dressed in period costumes, but Giannone’s novel is anything but saccharine. The emotional core of the book lies in Sofia’s internal battle: her loyalty to her family, her fear of betrayal, and the gnawing sense that she’s meant for more than the life laid out for her. Giannone doesn’t give her an easy out, and that’s what makes the story so compelling. Susan Vinciotti Bonito’s narration is the secret weapon here. She doesn’t overact or rely on dramatic flourishes; instead, she trusts the material to carry the weight.
