The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood

I picked up this audiobook expecting a straightforward Robin Hood yarn, and while it certainly delivers that, it's more like stepping into the pages of an illustrated book come to life. Howard Pyle has a knack for bringing characters like Robin Hood, Little John, Friar Tuck, and the ever-resourceful Will Scarlet to the forefront in a way that feels personal and endearing, emphasizing their friendship and the lighthearted mischief as much as the archery and rescue missions. The narrator, David Case, is excellent, perfectly capturing the rhythm of Pyle's slightly archaic but immensely readable prose. His vocal variety helps distinguish the characters – Robin is earnest and bold, Little John is robust and hearty, Friar Tuck is gentle and bemused – making the ensemble feel wonderfully alive. The pacing is generally brisk, keeping the listener engaged through a series of episodic adventures. However, the sheer familiarity of the Robin Hood legend might mean some listeners find the stories less groundbreaking than others, and the slightly formal, almost Victorian narrative voice, while fitting Pyle's style, might feel a bit dated or slow to some modern ears accustomed to faster-paced storytelling.
