About This Audiobook

This gripping account of the Battle of Little Bighorn is a masterclass in military history storytelling. Daniel Davis's meticulous research and measured tone bring a complex and often misunderstood event to life. By focusing on the desperate acts of gallantry performed by individual soldiers, Davis humanizes the conflict and sheds new light on the motivations and actions of those involved.
Through his vivid descriptions of the battlefield and the people who fought there, Davis conjures a sense of place and atmosphere that immerses listeners in the world of 1870s America. The audiobook is enhanced by Bob Neufeld's clear and measured narration, which conveys the gravitas of the subject matter without ever feeling overly formal or dry.

Editor's Review ★★★★

AudioBook Atlas

I went into this audiobook expecting a dry, historian's take on the Battle of Little Bighorn, but what I got was so much more. Davis's writing is engaging and accessible, making even the most complex military tactics feel intuitive and easy to follow. Neufeld's narration is equally impressive, bringing a sense of pace and energy to the story that's hard to find in more traditional military histories. If I have one quibble, it's that the audiobook could benefit from a bit more context about the broader historical landscape. At times, it felt like we were jumping into the middle of a larger story without sufficient background information. But this is a minor complaint in what is otherwise a compelling and thought-provoking listen. Overall, I'd highly recommend The Most Desperate Acts of Gallantry to anyone interested in military history or the American West.
