Johanna Fairview’s narration is the secret sauce in this audiobook, elevating what’s already a gripping story into something immersive. Her voice drips with the kind of smooth, velvety drawl that screams ‘old-world vampire,’ but she never overdoes the clichés—her Aaron isn’t some wooden, brooding statue of angst; he’s got bite (pun intended), and Fairview captures his internal conflict with razor-sharp nuance. The chemistry between her and the side characters—especially Michelle, Aaron’s master—adds layers of complexity that make the world feel alive. Production-wise, the audio quality is crisp, with subtle sound design that enhances moments like casino chatter or late-night alleyway tension without ever feeling gimmicky. That said, I’ll admit the first act drags a tad; Luedke spends too much time on setup when the real fun doesn’t kick in until the 30-minute mark. And while the romance sizzles, Anastasia’s agency wavers a bit in the final act—she’s a fantastic protagonist until the plot veers into ‘damsel in distress’ territory.
