I went into this audiobook expecting a political rant, but what I got was something far more valuable: a systematic breakdown of how outrage became a product. Berry and Sobieraj don’t just complain—they map the supply chain of anger, from conservative talk radio to progressive punditry, showing how both sides use nearly identical tactics to hook audiences. Griffith’s narration is steady and clear, never veering into caricature, which is crucial because the book relies on credibility, not sensationalism. His voice has the calm authority of a seasoned documentary narrator, which makes the disturbing patterns even more convincing. The pacing is tight for a nonfiction work—9 and a half hours fly by because each chapter introduces a new tactic (like flattery or fearmongering) with concrete media examples. That said, the book occasionally over-relies on dated clips (pre-2016 media), which made me wish for a brief update addressing social media’s role. Also, while the analysis is thorough, it could have dug deeper into audience psychology—why we keep tuning in. Still, these are minor critiques. The production is clean, the ideas are sharp, and the message lingers: we’re not just consuming outrage—we’re funding it.
