The man doesn’t perform the text; he inhabits it, dropping his vowels like spent brass and letting the pauses hang like parachute canopies caught in a tree. That’s the trick here: narration that feels less like a performance and more like a transmission from the past. The book’s strongest sequence is the blow-by-blow of Operation Market Garden, where Trenlow-Symes pulls back just enough to let the fog of war seep into the prose—no grandstanding, just the cold math of men against impossible odds. My only quibble: the closing chapter on the Falklands rushes the political context a little too fast, leaving you hungry for the same depth given to earlier battles. And I’ll be honest, the 2h49 runtime sometimes feels like a sprint through a museum you wish you could dawdle in—tighter editing on repetitious anecdotes would have tightened the choke chain. Still, this audiobook earns its wings; after the final ‘click’ of the ejector seat, I wanted a debrief and a stiff drink.
