The People Watcher

I’ll admit, I went into *The People Watcher* skeptical—how many times can we revisit the ‘someone’s watching you’ premise before it feels stale? But within 20 minutes, Lloyd had me hooked, not with jump scares or gratuitous violence, but with the slow, insidious creep of *plausibility*. The protagonist’s descent into fixation is so well-drawn that I found myself side-eyeing strangers on my own commute, which, frankly, is the mark of a thriller doing its job. The real brilliance lies in how Lloyd plays with perspective: just when you think you’ve got the ‘watcher’ figured out, the narrative shifts, and suddenly you’re questioning *everything*. That said, the middle act drags slightly—there’s a stretch where the protagonist’s repetition of ‘I know I saw him’ starts to feel more like padding than tension-building. And while the ending delivers, it’s a shade too neat for a story that otherwise thrives on ambiguity. The narration, though, is flawless. Eleanor Bennett’s performance is particularly standout; she nails the exhausting, circular logic of anxiety, her voice tightening with each perceived slight or shadowy figure. Ahmed Hamad’s sections, meanwhile, are deliciously ambiguous—his tone is so neutral it’s unnerving, leaving you to wonder if he’s a predator, a protector, or just an unlucky bystander. The production team deserves credit, too: the audio mixing is crisp, and the occasional ambient sounds (a car door slamming, a whispered phrase) are used sparingly but to devastating effect. My only nitpick? The transitions between narrators could be smoother; a few cuts feel abrupt, jarring you out of the moment. Still, this is a thriller that lingers, the kind that’ll have you replaying scenes in your head long after the credits roll—especially if you’ve ever caught someone’s eye a second too long on public transport.
