About This Audiobook

The Plague Stones isn’t just a ghost story—it’s a dismantling of memory, grief, and the lies villages bury with their dead. James Brogden weaves rural English folklore into a visceral narrative where the past doesn’t whisper; it claws its way into the present. When a historian returns to his childhood home to investigate ancient burial markers, he uncovers a cycle of violence and silence that refuses to stay dormant. This is folk horror with emotional weight, where every revelation cuts close to the bone, and the true horror isn’t the supernatural—it’s what people do to protect their secrets. Matthew Lloyd Davies’ narration elevates the tension with a performance that’s both intimate and unnerving. His measured pacing and subtle shifts in tone make the creeping dread feel personal, as if the story is being confided in hushed tones by a neighbor who knows too much. The audiobook’s soundscape is unobtrusive but effective—dripping stone, distant church bells—hinting at unseen presences without overplaying its hand. Brogden avoids genre clichés, favoring psychological depth over jump scares, and the result is a haunting that lingers long after the final stone is turned.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went in expecting moody atmosphere and got a narrative gut-punch instead. The Plague Stones builds with the inevitability of a collapsing tomb—relentless and suffocating. Matthew Lloyd Davies is perfectly cast; his voice carries the weariness of someone who’s spent too long digging up bad memories, and his restrained delivery makes the moments of horror hit even harder. One scene in a flooded crypt, conveyed almost entirely through sound and pacing, left me staring at the ceiling, too tense to move. Brogden’s prose is lean but evocative, and the way he ties the supernatural to cycles of communal guilt gives the story a moral gravity that most horror lacks. That said, the middle sags slightly under exposition—there’s a stretch where folklore exposition slows the momentum, and a lesser narrator might’ve lost me. Davies keeps it grounded, but the script demands a lot of info-dumping. Still, the final act redeems everything with a climax that’s emotionally and spiritually devastating. This isn’t escapism; it’s an excavation. If you like your horror slow-burn, psychologically acute, and deeply rooted in place, this audiobook will get under your skin—and stay there.
