The romance subplot with fellow polymaker Marion is sweet but never saccharine, mostly because Alvie’s too busy obsessing over her latest creation (a *self-playing piano roll*—genius) to moon over him. Zimmerman’s narration elevates the material, especially in the dialogue. She gives Praff a gravelly authority that makes his rare compliments land like gold, and her Alvie is all youthful exasperation and repressed brilliance. My only critique? The pacing stumbles slightly in the middle, where the workshop scenes start to feel repetitive—yes, we *get* it, plastic is hard to enchant—but the final act’s emotional payoff (and a genuinely clever magical twist) more than makes up for it.
