I’ll admit, I went into *The President’s Husband* skeptical—political romances can so easily tip into fantasy or preachiness. But Murphy’s novel surprised me by focusing on the *marriage* more than the presidency. Grayson and David’s relationship isn’t just a symbol; it’s a living, breathing thing, strained by power imbalances, resentment, and the absurdity of David being reduced to a ‘First Husband’ headline. The audiobook excels in its quieter moments: Fuller’s delivery during their late-night arguments or David’s sarcastic asides to staffers makes the characters feel like real people, not archetypes. That said, the pacing isn’t perfect. The middle drags slightly as the plot gets bogged down in West Wing-esque policy debates that, while realistic, don’t always serve the emotional core. And while Fuller’s narration is strong overall, his voice for minor female characters occasionally veers into caricature—a misstep in an otherwise nuanced performance. Still, the final act delivers a satisfying payoff, especially in how it handles the couple’s public vs. private selves. If you’re looking for a romance with teeth—or a political drama that remembers love is political, too—this is worth your time. Just don’t expect easy answers.
