The Reckoning

Amelie Griffin’s narration is the glue holding this audiobook together—her ability to shift from a growling alpha’s menace to a heroine’s reluctant vulnerability makes the listening experience feel like eavesdropping on a private, high-stakes conversation. She nails the small details too, like the throaty rasp in the king’s voice when he’s losing control or the sharp inhale the heroine takes when she’s about to lose her temper. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle act, when the story lingers a beat too long on the political maneuvering of the pack’s elders. It’s not enough to derail the momentum, but it does feel like a detour when the book’s real magic is in the raw, emotional push-and-pull between the leads. Crane’s worldbuilding shines brightest in the quiet moments—the way she describes the scent of pine and rain after a fight, or the ache in the heroine’s bones as she wrestles with her instincts. The chemistry between the leads never wavers, though, and Griffin sells it with a performance that’s equal parts sultry and sinister. My only real critique? The ending feels rushed, like the story wanted to sprint to the finish line without savoring the fallout. Still, the journey is so deliciously tense and the payoff so satisfying that I’ll forgive the sprint.
