I was immediately captivated by 'The Red Sacrament'. Hinkley's writing is visceral and unapologetic, painting a vivid, often gruesome picture of life (and undeath) in 19th-century Paris. The story is a slow burn, focusing on the complex dynamics within the vampire coven and the human world they inhabit, rather than jumping straight into action. This pacing might not be for everyone, but I found it allowed the characters and their relationships to truly shine. Williams' narration is a significant part of this audiobook's allure. Her performance is nuanced and engaging, perfectly capturing the dark, decadent tone of the story. My only critiques are minor: at times, the sheer number of characters can be overwhelming, and a few plot threads feel underdeveloped. However, these are small complaints in an otherwise outstanding listen.
