Jay O. Sanders nails this performance with a quiet, measured intensity that feels like listening to a campfire story told by someone who’s seen things they can’t unsee. His portrayal of Richard Kinnell—initially smug, then increasingly unnerved—is pitch-perfect, the kind of voice that makes you lean in closer, as if proximity alone could ward off the unease. The pacing is crisp, with Sanders milking the pauses between sentences for maximum unease; you can practically hear the gears turning in Kinnell’s head as the painting’s influence tightens its grip. That said, the audiobook’s short runtime does it few favors in terms of world-building. The story’s conclusion arrives so quickly that the emotional gut-punch feels almost abrupt, as if King trusted the dread to carry the weight alone—and, mostly, it does. If you’re looking for a full-bodied horror experience, this might leave you wanting more meat on the bones, but as a tightly coiled nightmare, it’s hard to beat. The production is clean, with no distractions from the narration, though at times the recording’s intimacy borders on claustrophobic—an effect that might not sit well with listeners who prefer their horror with a little more breathing room.
