Chamberlain doesn’t just write about guilt—she embeds it in the bones of the story. Joelle’s marriage to Mara’s husband after her friend’s aneurysm isn’t framed as romantic or selfless; it’s a transaction, a way to keep Mara’s son in the family. Rapson’s narration is the secret weapon here. She doesn’t overplay Joelle’s emotions—instead, she lets the silence between lines do the work, making Joelle’s repression feel like a physical weight. When the dam finally breaks (and it *does*), Rapson’s performance is devastatingly understated. That said, the middle act drags slightly with repetitive internal debates about Joelle’s choices. I found myself wishing Chamberlain had trimmed a few of the circular arguments about morality—we *get* it, Joelle is torn—but the payoff in the final third justifies the buildup. The production is flawless, though I’d caution listeners that Mara’s post-stroke voice, while brilliantly performed, might be difficult for some to hear. What stays with me isn’t the plot’s twists (though there are a few sharp ones), but the way the audiobook forces you to sit with Joelle’s complicity.
