I went into this audiobook skeptical—another self-help classic spoon-feeding me the same old ‘just think positive!’ nonsense. But within the first 20 minutes, David Moran’s gravelly, no-nonsense delivery of Allen’s ‘As a Man Thinketh’ made me sit up and listen. The man doesn’t just *suggest* you take responsibility for your thoughts; he *demands* it, and the narration backs it up with the weight of a professor calling you out in lecture. Paul Murphy’s voice is brighter and more energetic, perfect for Allen’s passages on action and ambition, while Nicole Owens adds a soothing, almost maternal cadence to the softer, reflective pieces. Together, they create a dynamic that keeps the listening experience from feeling monotonous, despite the dense material. My one gripe? Some of the older English idioms (‘thou,’ ‘hath’) might trip up modern ears, and a few essays drag in the middle with what feels like unnecessary repetition. Still, the production team nails the pacing—never rushing, never dragging—and the result is an audiobook that demands your attention. If you’re the type who needs a jolt of unfiltered truth rather than another sugar-coated pep talk, this is the one. I’ve highlighted more pages in this book than any other in years.
