I’ve read *Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde* several times, but this audiobook gave it a new dimension. Matthew Lloyd Davies doesn’t perform—he inhabits. His measured tone, almost like a legal deposition, makes the unraveling feel all the more credible. When Utterson reads Jekyll’s final confession, Davies’ voice fractures just slightly, conveying panic beneath the decorum. That restraint is what makes this narration so effective: the horror isn’t shouted, it’s whispered. The production is crisp, with no distracting effects, which suits the material perfectly. That said, I wished for a slightly more distinct vocal distinction between characters like Lanyon and Enfield—Davies keeps them too close in timbre, which can cause confusion in dialogue-heavy scenes. Also, while the pacing is generally excellent, the first 30 minutes feel a bit slow as the mystery builds. But once Hyde appears in full force, the momentum becomes relentless. This isn’t a flashy adaptation; it’s a lean, intelligent interpretation that trusts the text—and the listener. If you’re looking for a faithful, unsettling listen that lingers, this is the version to choose.
