The Trouble with #9

I went into this expecting a light, fluffy sports romance, and while *The Trouble with #9* delivers on the laughs and chemistry, it’s so much sharper than I anticipated. Tim Paige’s narration is a revelation—his Jace isn’t just a lovable jerk; he’s a *specific* kind of jerk, the kind who high-fives his own mistakes and calls it a lifestyle. The way Paige sells Jace’s self-aware arrogance, especially in scenes where he’s backpedaling like a champ, made me laugh out loud. Meg Sylvan, on the other hand, is the yin to his yang. Her Reagan is all clipped vowels and eye rolls, but Sylvan gives her depth—when Reagan’s walls crack, you hear it in the tremor of her voice, and it’s devastating in the best way. That said, the book isn’t without flaws. The fake-dating trope is executed well, but the resolution feels a little too tidy, as if the messier implications of their history were swept under the rug for the sake of a neat ending. And while the hockey scenes are immersive, non-sports fans might find themselves wading through terminology (though Rayne does a solid job of explaining without lecturing). The production is crisp, with no audible distractions, and the chemistry between Paige and Sylvan is undeniable. If you’re a rom-com purist or a hockey romance newbie, this might be a bridge too far—but if you love your love stories with bite and your heroes with flaws you can’t ignore, *The Trouble with #9* is a slam dunk.
