About This Audiobook

Lady Victoria Kirby isn’t here to play by the rules—or marry well. Armed with a trowel instead of a fan, she’d rather catalog flora and fauna than curtsy to the ton’s shallow expectations. But when her unconventional passion for botany clashes with her family’s desperate need for a respectable marriage, Victoria finds herself thrust into a high-stakes wager: a fake courtship with the infuriatingly charming Lord Holloway. What starts as a calculated farce quickly spirals into territory neither expected—especially when Victoria’s sharp mind and unorthodox pursuits begin to intrigue the very man she’s supposed to fool. Eva Devon delivers a historical romance that’s equal parts wit and wildness, where intelligence is the ultimate power move and love is a risk worth taking.

This audiobook thrives on its narrator’s ability to balance Victoria’s fierceness with her vulnerability, and Higgins nails the tonal shifts—from dry scientific observations to breathless romantic tension—without ever losing the story’s pulse. The pacing is relentless, though the mid-section occasionally lingers a beat too long on societal observations, risking a slight drag in momentum for those craving constant action. Still, Devon’s worldbuilding crackles with authenticity, from the grit of London’s underbelly to the stifling extravagance of the aristocracy, making this far more than a run-of-the-mill Regency romance.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I approached *The Wedding Wager* with skepticism—another “enemies-to-lovers” plot dressed in corsets? But Eva Devon’s sharp pen and Sasha Higgins’ magnetic narration turned my highbrow expectations into something thoroughly delightful. Higgins’ performance is a masterclass in vocal distinction; she nails Victoria’s bristling intellect with a crisp, no-nonsense cadence, then melts into velvety warmth during the romance’s tender moments. Her Holloway is a revelation—a man whose gruff charm masks surprising depth, all brought to life with a growl that lingers. That said, the production hiccups almost derailed me: a missed edit in Chapter 12 (a line repeats awkwardly) and a bizarrely abrupt fade-out mid-climax jarred the immersion. But these are minor flaws in an otherwise sparkling audiobook. Devon’s best trick? Making Victoria’s love of botany feel like a rebellious act—her journals, quoted in voiceover, are the cherry on top of this feminist-leaning fairy tale. If you crave a heroine who outsmarts her era’s limitations, and a love story that rewards brains over obedience, this is your next obsession.
