About This Audiobook

If you’ve ever suspected your siblings were secretly plotting chaos, *The Weirdies* is your kindred spirit. Michael Buckley crafts a deliciously dark comic tale starring the misfit Triplets—Barnacle, Garlic, and Melancholy—whose family tree is more like a thorny bramble. These aren’t your average siblings; think of them as Dahl-esque antiheroes raised by a grandmother who may or may not be a witch. The short chapters and rapid-fire dialogue make this the perfect pick for car rides or bedtime readers who crave something spooky but silly. Buckley’s writing zips along with mischief and mordant humor, never sliding into saccharine territory. The audiobook’s brevity is its secret weapon, packing a punch of personality without overstaying its welcome, which is a rarity for a kids’ book these days. It’s equal parts whimsy and whodunit, with a dash of existential dread that’ll have young listeners questioning the sanity of their own relatives.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

Kate Winslet’s narration is the reason to listen to this audiobook, period. Her voice—those plummy vowels and that effortless shift from sly to sinister—makes even the clumsiest one-liners feel like a masterclass in comedic timing. She nails the Triplets’ collective snark, especially Melancholy’s deadpan delivery, which had me snorting out loud. The production is crisp, with sound effects that feel intentional rather than gimmicky (the creaky door that’s actually creepy is a standout). My only quibble is that the grandmother’s backstory feels rushed, leaving some of the world-building undercooked. The pacing is tight enough to hold attention spans hostage, but I could’ve used just a few more scenes with the Triplets scheming in their dimly lit attic hideout. Buckley’s world is so vivid that the 103-minute runtime feels like a tease—you’ll finish wanting more of their antics, not less. If your kid (or inner child) loves stories where the adults are the villains and the kids are the anarchists, this is a must-play. Winslet’s performance alone makes it a keeper, but the writing ensures it’s a re-listenable one, too.
