I’ll admit, I approached *The White Indian* expecting a dusty, by-the-numbers Western. Instead, I got a story that’s equal parts *Heart of Darkness* and *Lonesome Dove*—but with a psychological edge that’s rare for the genre. Rusty Sabin’s internal conflict isn’t just about ‘belonging’; it’s about survival in a world where both sides see him as a weapon. Brand’s prose is lean but poetic, and Ganim’s narration sells it perfectly. His Rusty isn’t a whiny kid or a stoic hero—he’s a young man whose voice cracks under pressure, whose Cheyenne phrases sound lived-in, not rehearsed. The production is clean, but there’s a deliberate rawness to the delivery that suits the material. That said, this isn’t a flawless listen. The middle act drags slightly as Rusty bounces between the two worlds, and some of the white characters veer into cartoonish villainy (though Ganim’s snarling delivery almost saves them). And while the ending lands with emotional weight, it feels rushed compared to the meticulous buildup. Still, those are quibbles. For an audiobook that makes you *feel* the weight of cultural identity—not just watch it play out—this is a standout. Just don’t expect easy answers or a hero who rides off into the sunset.
