Trouble Chaser

I approached *Trouble Chaser* expecting another forgettable crime anthology, but Cain’s prose hit like a sucker punch. The stories here—especially the titular ‘Trouble Chaser’ and ‘The Count’s Game’—are so tightly wound they feel like they might explode in your ears. Anthony Heald’s narration is the secret weapon; his voice drips with the weary cynicism of a man who’s seen too much, and his performance elevates the material from mere pulp to something far more sinister. Christine Williams, meanwhile, steals the show with her chilling portrayal of a femme fatale who’s all precision and poison, her delivery as razor-sharp as the plot itself. That said, the brevity works both for and against the collection. On one hand, the stories don’t overstay their welcome, leaving you hungry for more before the credits roll. On the other, a few of the shorter pieces—particularly ‘The Silver Eagle’—feel slightly underdeveloped, their endings abrupt almost to the point of frustration. The production is top-notch, with subtle ambient effects that immerse you in the era without ever distracting from the performances. If you’re a noir purist who demands style as much as substance, *Trouble Chaser* is a razor-thin slice of heaven—just don’t expect any warm and fuzzy resolutions.
