Una Casa Encantada [A Haunted House]

Jose Peciña’s narration is the unsung hero of this audiobook, and not just because he makes a two-minute ghostly exchange feel like a séance. His voice has the kind of calm authority that makes the story’s surreal premise feel unsettlingly plausible. When the ghost wife remarks, ‘We have not moved,’ his delivery lands with the weight of a promise—or a threat—and I found myself gripping my phone tighter, half-convinced the room had grown colder. The pacing is flawless for a piece this short; Woolf’s elliptical style could’ve felt rushed in less capable hands, but Peciña lingers just long enough on key phrases to let the dread steep. That said, the audiobook’s greatest strength—its brevity—is also its one frustration. Eight minutes feels like both too much and too little. By the time the story’s haunting payoff arrives, you’re already racing to rewind, desperate to catch what you might’ve missed in the first listen. A post-credits stinger or author’s note would’ve elevated the experience, though I suspect Woolf would’ve scoffed at such a crutch. The production quality is impeccable, but the lack of any visual or textual companion to deepen the context (how old is this story? Is it autobiographical?) left me wanting more. Still, as a standalone experience, it’s a master class in how to scare someone in the time it takes to boil a kettle. Just don’t expect to sleep peacefully afterward.
