Blaze isn’t a caricature of stoic suffering; he’s a man who’s spent years in survival mode, and his guardedness feels painfully real. The omega, whose name never feels like an afterthought, is the perfect foil—less a prize than a catalyst for Blaze’s halting self-reckoning. Their dynamic isn’t built on grand gestures but on the quiet erosion of defenses, which Bates renders with impressive restraint. Darby’s narration is a standout, particularly in how he handles Blaze’s internal monologues. The gruffness never overrides the vulnerability, and his portrayal of the omega’s quick wit adds a necessary levity. That said, the audiobook stumbles slightly in its pacing during the middle third, where the emotional beats drag just enough to make you wish for a tighter edit. The production itself is clean, but the occasional audio artifact (a faint pop here, a mic bump there) pulls you out of immersion more than it should. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise immersive experience.
