About This Audiobook

Paul Jennings is the undisputed king of bizarre, unsettling children’s stories, and *Unbearable!* is his twisted playground. These short tales defy expectations—one moment you’re chuckling at a kid’s clever trick, the next you’re staring at the page (or in this case, squinting at the audiobook) wondering what fresh kind of discomfort Jennings has dreamt up. The prose is sharp, the scenarios absurd yet oddly plausible, and the humor lands with the precision of a whoopee cushion in a quiet library. For kids with a taste for the macabre and adults nostalgic for the unsettling thrill of playground creep factor, these stories are a masterclass in mischief.

This audiobook edition elevates the experience with Stig Wemyss’s narration, which is less a performance and more a full-body immersion. His voice crackles with mischief, shifting effortlessly between wide-eyed childish wonder and the gleeful menace of a villain who’s *way* too pleased with himself. The pacing is brisk, never letting a joke or a creepy twist linger too long—because Jennings knows once you start to overthink a scenario like a boy turning into a frog, it’s already too late. The audio production is clean but lively, with just enough sound design to hint at the chaos without stealing the spotlight from the stories themselves.

AudioBook Atlas

First time listening to Stig Wemyss, and wow—I’m officially a fan. His narration of *Unbearable!* isn’t just good; it’s *alive*. He embodies every character with such vivid, almost physical energy that I found myself mimicking his inflections while listening in public (apologies to my fellow train passengers). The standout is his delivery of *The Cabbage Patch*, where he balances the absurdity of a kid’s vegetable-induced transformation with a creepiness that borders on horror-comedy perfection. The story’s climax, set to a faintly ominous soundtrack, had me checking over my shoulder—even though I was alone in my kitchen. That said, Jennings’ humor isn’t for everyone. Some stories rely heavily on the shock value of kids doing unsettlingly adult things (disclaimer: if you’re the parent who reads bedtime stories with a critical eye, a few of these might raise eyebrows). The pacing can also feel uneven at times*The Lift* builds beautifully but resolves in a way that feels almost abrupt, leaving me wanting just a *little* more payoff. Still, Wemyss’s performance sells even the cheesiest moments, and Jennings’ knack for turning mundane childhood fears into something gloriously grotesque is undeniable. By the end, I was both exhilarated and slightly concerned about the state of my own moral compass.
