About This Audiobook

Paul Ham's 'Vietnam' is not just a history lesson, but a raw, unfiltered journey into the heart of Australia's most divisive conflict. With unparalleled access to archives and firsthand accounts, Ham challenges conventional narratives, painting a vivid, often brutal picture of the war's impact on soldiers and civilians alike. Peter Byrne's narration is a standout, his deep, resonant voice lending gravitas to the harrowing tales, while his ability to switch seamlessly between accents brings the characters to life. This isn't a war story for the faint-hearted, but for those seeking a comprehensive, unflinching account, it's an essential listen.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

As someone who's grown up hearing snippets of the Vietnam War, I found Ham's 'Vietnam' both illuminating and unsettling. Byrne's narration is exceptional, his ability to convey emotion and tension making the 31-hour runtime fly by. The production is minimalist, letting the stories take center stage, which is just as well, as Ham's research is nothing short of extraordinary. My only critique is that at times, the sheer volume of detail can be overwhelming. But then again, that's the point - Ham wants us to confront the complexity and horror of war. This isn't a feel-good listen, but it's a crucial one. It's like having a front-row seat to history, warts and all.
