I've had the pleasure of listening to 'War Clouds Gather' multiple times, and each pass has only deepened my appreciation for this hauntingly beautiful story. John Voce's narration is a significant part of the book's enduring appeal, bringing a sense of quiet authority to the narrative that's impossible to ignore. One of the things that struck me about Watt's writing is the way he weaves together multiple storylines, often using the smallest details to reveal character and propel the plot forward. A particularly striking example of this can be seen in the relationship between two of the main characters, who seem to be on the cusp of disaster even as they're desperate to hold onto one another. If I have any quibbles, it's that the pacing can feel a bit uneven at times, with some sections feeling overly long or meandering. However, these moments are relatively rare, and even when they do occur, they're often redeemed by the sheer emotional power of Watt's writing. Additionally, some listeners may find the overall tone of the book to be a bit too somber, given the subject matter. However, for me, the payoff was well worth any initial discomfort – and I'd highly recommend 'War Clouds Gather' to anyone seeking a thought-provoking, deeply moving listen.
