Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I devoured "Watching the English" in one sitting, and I'm still reeling from the experience. Kate Fox's anthropological insights, coupled with Joan Walker's delightful narration, made this 21-hour audiobook feel like a series of conversations with a clever friend. Walker's tone is warm and inviting, perfectly capturing the dry wit and sarcasm that underpin Fox's observations. As I listened, I found myself nodding along in recognition, remembering instances where I'd unknowingly broken some invisible rule of British behavior. One of the strengths of this audiobook is its ability to balance humor and insight. Fox's writing is clever and incisive, and Walker brings out the best in her material. However, at times I felt that Walker's narration could have benefited from a bit more pace variation. Some sections felt a tad slow, which made me check my speed setting. Additionally, while the production quality is excellent, I did notice some occasional background hiss. These are minor quibbles, however, and they didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the audiobook.
