I was thoroughly enthralled by When Caesar Was King, David Margolick's captivating biography of Sid Caesar. As an audiobook editor, I'm always on the lookout for productions that expertly balance storytelling with production values, and Margolick's work does not disappoint. Rob Shapiro's narration is a particular highlight, bringing a levity and playfulness to Margolick's prose that perfectly captures the irrepressible spirit of Caesar and his cohorts. What struck me most, however, was how Margolick skillfully navigates the tension between Caesar's on-screen persona and his more vulnerable off-screen struggles, creating a nuanced portrait of a true comedy legend." "One quibble I have is that the audiobook could benefit from a bit more contextual framing around the historical context of Caesar's rise to fame. While Margolick does an excellent job of placing Caesar within the cultural landscape of the time, I found myself wanting more explicit connections to the broader social and economic forces at play.
