I’ll admit, I approached *Will Fain, U.S. Marshal* skeptical of yet another ‘tough lawman vs. outlaws’ tale, but Lane’s writing and Chandler’s narration blew past my expectations like a Texas blue norther. The story kicks off with a jailbreak that feels *lived-in*—no dramatic slow-motion escapes, just a dirty, desperate scramble that leaves bodies in its wake. Chandler’s narration is a masterclass in restraint; he doesn’t *act* so much as *inhabit* Will Fain, his voice a mix of weariness and steel, like a man who’s buried too many friends but still saddles up every morning. The counterfeiting subplot could’ve felt tacked-on, but Lane weaves it into the main conflict so tightly that it raises the stakes without bogging down the pace. That said, the book isn’t perfect. The women characters—what few there are—feel underdeveloped, more plot devices than people, which is a missed opportunity in a genre that too often sidelines them. And while the final showdown is satisfying, the resolution of the Fort Griffin posse’s vendetta wraps up a tad too neatly for a story that otherwise thrives on moral ambiguity. Still, the audio production is flawless: no distracting edits, no uneven volume, just Chandler’s voice and the occasional creak of a saddle or distant gunfire to pull you deeper into the world. If you love westerns that balance action with gritty realism—and narrators who sound like they’ve actually ridden the trails they’re describing—this is a must-listen. Just don’t expect any easy rides or clean consciences by the end.
